Published Fri 13 Mar 2020
Seven has assembled a world-class team of hosts and commentators to lead its coverage of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
For the first time in Australian free-to-air television history, there will be 43 dedicated Olympic channels across 7, 7TWO and 7plus all FREE and in HD.
Water Polo will be in good hands with Olympic Gold Medalist Debbie Watson joining the commentary team.
Watson has been part of the Athens 2004, Beijing 2008, London 2012 and Rio 2016 Olympic commentary teams and is a regular calling the OVO Australian Waterpolo League and domestic test matches.
“It’s a huge privilege to be put in this position, I only got to go to one games as a player but now I’ve got to enjoy the experience 5 more on the other side,” Watson said.
“The Tokyo 2020 Olympics are going to be really exciting - both our men’s and women’s Australian teams are more than capable of medalling,” she said.
“The men have been so close for so long, and the women have been amongst it for a long period, so I’m really looking forward to seeing what they produce in Japan.”
After the Olympic Flame was lit in Olympia, Greece, overnight to start the Tokyo 2020 torch relay, Seven announced its coverage would be anchored by Bruce McAveny, Hamish McLachlan, Mel McLaughlin, Johanna Griggs, Sonia Kruger, Lisa Sthalekar, Trent Copeland and Abbey Way.
Seven’s broadcast team also features 14 of Australia’s greatest ever Olympians, with 14 gold medals between them, plus hundreds of Games both as competitors and media personalities – a collection of stars that left a first-time Olympic broadcaster wonderstruck at a team dinner.
They will be joined by fellow gold medallists Steve Hooker, Nick Green, Giaan Rooney, Scott McGrory, Russell Mark and Debbie Watson, while Olympians Andrew Gaze, Rachael Sporn, Tamsyn Lewis-Manou, David Culbert, Kate Bates and Ash Nelson also headline Seven’s coverage.
