Spotlight on referees: Sheterline enjoying new challenge at Summer Slam

Jordan Sheterline is one of the referees appointed to officiate at the 2022 Summer Slam this week in Brisbane.
Summer Slam is the first national level competition for Sheterline, who has been refereeing at a club level in Queensland in recent years.
The 27-year-old picked up the whistle as a way to keep learning and hasn’t looked back since.
“I saw refereeing as another opportunity to give back to the sport, whilst I was working in my previous role at Water Polo Queensland,” Sheterline said.
“As a first time referee at a national competition, it has been such a privilege to work alongside some of Australia’s top referees.
“This tournament has been fantastic, after a difficult two years and it’s been so good to see a national water polo competition up and running again,” he said.
With the Australian Youth Water Polo Championships and Australian Waterpolo League on the horizon, Sheterline hopes to continue improving his refereeing with a goal of taking it to the next level.
“I’m hoping to be able to referee at the 2022 Australian Youth Water Polo Championships in April,” Sheterline said.
“And then I have aspirations of hopefully refereeing in the Australian Waterpolo League,” he said.
Having taken the leap to get into refereeing himself, Sheterline encouraged anyone thinking about getting involved to just do it.
“Take any opportunity you can - if it is refereeing at your local club trainings or even local competitions,” Sheterline said.
“Take every opportunity with open arms.”
