Tokyo Olympic squad members Nathan Power (KAP7 Aussie Sharks) and Maddy Steere (Aussie Stingers) are among 40 student athletes who have been announced as AIS Education Scholarship recipients.

The Australian Institute of Sport has recently benefited from receiving a one-off private monetary donation for the sole purpose of supporting Australian high performance athletes by removing some of the financial challenges in the pursuit of study and educational experiences.

For KAP7 Aussie Sharks member Nathan Power is studying his Masters of Commerce and International Business at UNSW while he is currently playing club water polo in Barcelona and preparing for the Tokyo Olympic Games.

Aussie Stingers squad member Maddy Steere, who is completing a Master of Pharmaceutical Medicine at the University of New South Wales understands the challenges of being a student athlete and is appreciative of this assistance from the AIS.

“Being able to balance both academics and sport has been a big challenge for me,” Steere said.

“This scholarship is extremely helpful in enabling me to finish my degree while continuing to play water polo.

“It relieves a lot of the financial stress that uni brings so that I can focus on achieving my goals,” she said.

Steere said when selecting a university, she couldn’t go past UNSW.

“I was really drawn to the Master of Pharmaceutical Medicine at UNSW because it was a degree that offered a lot of practical experience, which would best prepare me for a career after water polo.

“UNSW has been extremely accommodating and flexible with my studies, the Elite Athlete Program Manager has helped me create a pathway that will enable me to achieve an ideal study and sport balance,” she said.
