Bridgette Gusterson, captain of the Sydney 2000 gold medal winning water polo team, has tonight been inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame (SAHOF).

Gusterson debuted for Australia in 1992, amassing 212 international matches and scoring more than 400 goals.

She played in four World Championship and two World Cup campaigns before leading Australia to a historic gold medal win at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games.

Water Polo Australia CEO Richard McInnes said he could think of no one more deserving.

“Being inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame is one of the highest honours an Australian athlete can aspire to,” McInnes said.

“Bridgette’s leadership of the Australian team in its journey towards our historical gold medal at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games will remain in the memories of all Australia water polo fans and her sporting career will no doubt inspire many future generations of water polo players to come.

“I wish to join the Australian water polo community in thanking Bridgette for her passion and dedication she has shown to the sport we all love and congratulate her on such an outstanding achievement.

Gusterson joins fellow Sydney 2000 gold medallist Debbie Watson OAM and 1986 World Champion Debbie Cummins BEM as water polo’s representatives in the prestigious SAHOF.
