Five Australian water polo representatives took part in the Special Olympic Splash, a swimming fundraising event for corporate teams, to support the programs of Special Olympics Australia.
The Splash, which was held at Andrew Boy Charlton Pool on Wednesday evening, 16 November, was created by Peter Hadfield, Dual Olympic representative in Decathlon.
Australian water polo Olympians Johnno Cotterill (2012 & 2016), Keesja Gofers (2016 & 2020), Nathan Power (2020) and Isobel Bishop (2016) plus Australian Sharks representative Nick Falzon hit the pool along with Olympic bronze medallist (swimming), Matt Abood.
The Special Olympics Splash is a series of 8 x 50m freestyle relays which is supported by corporate Sydney.
The water polo players swam with the six corporate teams which qualified for the finals and in addition, they swam in a demonstration relay with a team of Special Olympic swimmers.
Over $65,000 was raised on the night, with the team from KPMG, supported by Nathan Power taking out this year’s Splash trophy. The highest fundraising team was Minter Ellison.
Peter Hadfield said “this is the seventh year we have conducted the Splash and our fundraising total exceeds $550,000, thanks to the generosity of the participating corporate teams and the support of some of Australia’s leading aquatic sportsmen and women.
“The water polo players were most generous with their time and their support was instrumental in the success of this year’s Splash.”
