Water Polo Queensland has announced a new look Masters’ Championships event to be held in November 2020 on the Gold Coast.

In light of cancellation of the Pan Pacific Masters Games and WPA Open Championships, Water Polo Queensland is working with the Gold Coast Performance Centre on the Gold Coast to deliver a Masters Championships.

Open to all registered Water Polo Australia members over the age of 30, teams will compete across three days, with both men’s and women’s divisions available.

Water Polo Queensland Chief Executive Officer Mel Woosnam said it will be a great opportunity for Masters competitors to get involved in the festival of water polo.

“With restrictions starting to lift in Queensland we’re excited to see some water polo action return,” Woosnam said.

“While we will be monitoring the Government advice around competitions and return to play protocols, we are excited to get some water polo action back on the national calendar.

“Teams will take part in a 5’s format which will create a fast and exciting format of our game for competitors to take part in.

“I’m looking forward to welcoming Masters competitors to Queensland and can’t wait to watch this event come to life,” she said.

Water Polo Australia CEO, Richard McInnes, said: “Water Polo Australia welcomes the addition of the Masters Championships to the calendar in 2020 and want to thank Water Polo Queensland for staging this event after the very disrupted year we have had.

“After consulting with our State Associations it was determined it was not going to be viable to conduct the full Open Championships in 2020, but there was interest from our Masters competitors to still have some form of competition.

“Water Polo Queensland in partnership with the Gold Coast Performance Centre, have the ideal facilities to support a Masters competition and we hope that competitors will take the opportunity to get involved.

“We look forward to launching the WPA Open Championships, featuring masters, beach polo and country competition, in May 2021.

“Water Polo Australia will be unveiling the new national competitions framework in the coming the weeks,” he said.
