Junior water polo players from across the country returned to Perth’s pools for the second week of competition at the 2023 Australian Youth Water Polo Championships today.
Week two welcomes 12&U and 16&U players for five days of water polo, before the finals on Thursday 19 January.
For many of the 12&U players, it is their first experience playing at the Australian Youth Water Polo Championships and against teams from other states.
Eloise Case from 12&U Mermaids said although she was nervous before the first game, she’s excited for the competition.
“It’s been going pretty good so far, we’ve won a game and lost one,” Case said.
“It’s pretty exciting, I was a little nervous to start off with but now that we’ve played a few games I’m feeling good.
“I think Perth is really awesome - the weather is good and we have a nice hotel,” she said.
Case is enjoying the experience of travelling with her team mates, and playing a sport that she loves.
“I love water polo because I love being in the water. I also love swimming and netball, and basically those sports combined are water polo. I just love water polo,” Case said.
“It’s really good getting to play sport with my friends. I like all of my team and we’re a pretty good team too,” she said.
Tom Drevernan and Tom Clements from Melville 16&U Boys said it’s been a great first day of competition.
“It’s been pretty fun so far, and good competition to play against as well,” Drevernan said.
“In Perth, we don’t have many teams, so it was good to play against some teams from over east,” he said.
“We had two games today, they were both challenging but that was good,” Clements said.
“This is my first time playing at the Australian Youth Water Polo Championships, so I was a bit nervous but I’m super excited now,” he said.
“We’re playing Sydney Uni tomorrow which we’re looking forward to and then hopefully finals,” Drevernan added.
