Last weekend, Water Polo Australia hosted the 2019 Technical Performance Conference at the Australian Institute of Sport.
More than 30 referees and delegates from around the country attended the two-day professional development opportunity, with the conference aimed at bringing together Australia’s top group of officials ahead of the 2019/20 season.
The program was jam-packed, focusing on the interpretation and application of the new FINA rules, referee development and pathways, and previews of the upcoming AWL season. The conference was enhanced by guest speakers Former FIFA official Ben Williams and former NRL official Steve Clarke sharing their learnings and perspectives on elite sport refereeing.
WPA Referee Director Phillip Bower said it was great to work with the 33 officials who attended.
“I believe that those who attended are now in a position to go back to their respective states and help educate not only referees but players and coaches as to how the game is now officiated,” Bower said.
“We had a number of high-class speakers who contributed to a successful weekend, and provided updates on how our game is played in this era of change. I’d like to thank Elvis Fatovic and Daniel Flahive for the insights they shared with the group” he said.
WPA and Phillip look forward to continuing and growing the concept in 2020.
