FINA World Super League

The FINA World Super League Finals is an annual international competition organised by the sport’s international governing body in which the world’s best men’s and women’s teams participate.

In 2002, FINA organised the inaugural men’s World League Final, the women’s competition began two years later in 2004.

In 2007, FINA launched a new format consisting of two preliminary qualification tournaments into the men’s and women’s World League Finals tournaments. Teams based in Europe would compete in a “home and away” style European preliminary tournament and teams based in Africa, Americas, Asia & Oceania would compete in the Inter-Continental Cup.

As part of the men’s World League Finals four teams from Europe and three teams from the Inter-Continental Cup and the host nation qualify for the event. While in the women’s World League Finals, three teams from Europe, four teams from the Inter-Continental Cup and the host nation make compete.

More information surrounding FINA’s system of competition can be found here.

Eight teams in total compete in FINA’s World League Finals. Groups for the tournament are established based on the results of the Preliminary Round and Super Final of the previous edition of the FINA Water Polo World League as well as the last major Water Polo Competition (FINA World Championships or Olympic Games).

The Aussie Sharks and Stingers attempt to qualify for the World League Finals through the Asia and Oceania tournament known as the World League Intercontinental Cup

The Aussie Sharks achieved bronze medals in 2007 and 2008, while the Aussie Stingers have been runners up on four occasions, most recently in 2015. The Aussie Stingers are one of two teams to compete in all 15 World league Final competitions since the competition began.
