Water Polo Australia (WPA) has today launched its new strategic plan, 2032+ Powered by Purpose, setting out a clear vision to future-proof the sport and empower its community to grow the game through to the Brisbane 2032 Olympic Games and beyond.
Developed following consultation with stakeholders, the plan builds on the achievements of the 2020-2030 National Strategic Framework and reflects a sharper organisational purpose which is: To future-proof Water Polo in Australia and empower our community to grow the game.
This is more than a plan – it’s a shared commitment to working together, making smart decisions, and ensuring that water polo is sustainable, inclusive, and successful at every level.

Our Three Strategic Priorities
LEAD WELL – Building a stronger, smarter organisation
We will strengthen our capability to deliver on our purpose by setting the highest standards in governance, integrity, and financial sustainability. This includes expanding revenue beyond government funding, investing in fit-for-purpose digital systems, and working in true partnership with Member Organisations to deliver national priorities locally.
PLAY WELL – Growing participation and engagement like never before
We will increase the visibility of water polo, expand the national club network, and welcome 30,000 playing members by 2032. Our goal is to create safe, fun, and inclusive environments that inspire more people to play, coach, referee, and volunteer. We will also work to expand and improve water polo facilities nationwide.
WIN WELL – Achieving sustained success on the world stage
We will provide world-class high-performance environments for our Aussie Stingers and Aussie Sharks, ensuring they are ready to deliver medal-winning performances at Los Angeles 2028 and Brisbane 2032. This includes enhancing the Australian Water Polo League as a premier pathway and platform to connect with new fans.
Our Goals for 2032 and Beyond
By the Brisbane 2032 Olympic Games, we aim to:

Generate $20 million in annual revenue, with less than 40% from government funding.

Expand to 30,000 playing members nationwide.

Deliver 2 Olympic medals for the Ord Minnett Aussie Stingers and Aussie Sharks.

President Trent Birkett says the plan is about clarity and unity: “The 2032+ Powered by Purpose gives us direction and a united ambition. It’s about building strong governance, growing participation, and ensuring our teams succeed on the world stage.”
CEO Tim Welsford added: “We have set clear, measurable targets and we will report back on progress every quarter. This is about delivering a real, lasting impact for water polo in Australia.”
