Become a Referee

Officials are the backbone to any sport. From beginner programs to high performance, officials are vital to the sport of water polo at all levels.

In water polo, Officials include Referees, Technical Delegates and Table Officials. All play a crucial role in ensuring water polo is an enjoyable experience for everyone, as well as laying the foundation for the development of better players and ensuring games can be played successfully and in the right spirit.

Being an official can provide great fulfilment while also taking you around the world as part of this global game.

How do I Become a Referee?

Become a Water Polo Australia Member

Join through the member portal. To become a referee, you’ll need to become a Gold Member to access the Water Polo Learning Centre content.

Complete Core Requirements

Before starting your referee journey, you must complete the following compliance requirements:

  • Obtain a Working with Children Check within your home state (check your state for minimum age requirements)
  • Adhere to Think Act Play Guidelines
  • Undertake recommended Sports Integrity Australia requirements

Begin Your Accreditation

Log in to the Water Polo Learning Centre and complete your accreditation. Your accreditation consists of online modules through WPA’s Learning Centre and practical activities supported by your State Association.

Water Polo Australia’s Match Official Framework is designed to establish clear standards for referee development.

Your Development Journey

WPA acknowledges that each learner’s journey is different. While there is a clear standard of performance, there are many ways to access learning resources and opportunities as you progress on your development journey.

While WPA continues to develop the official Referee Learning and Development Framework we encourage all officials to take advantage of:

  • Face-to-face workshops
  • Online programs through the Water Polo Learning Centre
  • Mentoring opportunities
