The Ord Minnett Aussie Sharks are through to the quarterfinals of the World Aquatics World Cup Division 2 in Malta, after an 18-9 win against Slovakia in the Round of 16.
Having played Slovakia at the Danube Cup ahead of the World Cup, the Aussies were familiar with their opposition but knew they were going to have to work hard for the win.
The Ord Minnett Aussie Sharks opened the scoring, taking a 4-2 lead into the quarter time break, before extending it out to 10-5 at half time.
Another five goals in the third quarter saw the Aussies take a 15-8 lead into the last quarter, finding the back of the net on another three occasions in the last to close it out at 18-9.
Ord Minnett Aussie Sharks Head Coach Tim Hamill was proud of his team’s performance.
“By far, our best performance on this tour and our best performance for some time,” Hamill said.
“We have been a little bit out of synch offensively and defensively throughout the preparation tournament in Slovakia and also during the rounds here in Malta.
“So it was really pleasing today to see that all of our principles and systems came together. We continue to be really strong in defence and are trying to evolve our offensive side of the game.
“Many of the aspects, offensively, that we’ve been working on played out today which was extremely pleasing.
“We will now play Germany tomorrow afternoon (local time) which should be a good match up for us,” he said.
The Ord Minnett Aussie Sharks will play Germany in the quarterfinals on Sunday 12 April at 12:30am AEST. Watch live on World Aquatics Recast – click here
