Water Polo Australia expands international reach with Barcelona Water Polo Academy partnership

2 Apr 2026

Water Polo Australia (WPA) is thrilled to announce Barcelona International Water Polo Academy (BIWPA) as the International Training Partner of the Australian Youth Water Polo Championships.

Founded in 2014 and based in one of the world’s iconic water polo destinations, BIWPA has built a reputation as one of the leading water polo programs in the world. Their programs are led by internationally recognised coaches and based on a proven methodology rooted in individual skill, technique and tactical decision-making.

The partnership further strengthens Water Polo Australia’s networks and a commitment to creating meaningful development opportunities for emerging talent in Australia. It is also hoped that this partnership will foster sports diplomacy opportunities including the growth of reciprocal training camps and academy programs in Australia – delivered by BIWPA.

BIWPA will be represented at the 2026 Australian Youth Water Polo Championships with a retail zone and digital activation. This will give athletes, coaches and families the chance to connect directly with their team, learn more about BIWPA’s international training opportunities and explore pathways into global high-performance environments.

Water Polo Australia CEO Tim Welsford said: “BIWPA’s commitment to growing the sport through high quality education and practical experience aligns closely with Water Polo Australia’s own vision for the future of the game.

“This partnership, aligning with the Australian Youth Water Polo Championships, opens exciting new pathways for Australian players and coaches to experience world class expertise  and take their careers to the next level,” he said.

As a leading organisation driven by water polo experts, BIWPA CEO Cristina Marin is excited to work with Water Polo Australia on enhancing the skill set and capabilities of future stars of the sport. We closely follow the growth of water polo in Australia and look forward to supporting both athletes and coaches through our high-performance training programs,” Marin said.

Together, Water Polo Australia and BIWPA are set to deliver an enhanced championship experience, helping inspire, educate and elevate the next generation of Aussie Stingers and Sharks players.
