Australian Officials set for World Cup Finals in Sydney

26 May 2026

Water Polo Australia is celebrating the appointment of three experienced Australian officials to the upcoming World Cup Finals in Sydney, with Ash Kaesler and Nicholas Hodgers selected as referees and Don Cameron appointed in an official capacity.

The appointments are another strong reflection of the growing reputation of Australian water polo officials on the international stage, while also providing a unique opportunity to perform at a major global event on home soil.

For Kaesler, the selection holds special significance with the World Cup Finals taking place in her home city.

“I was surprised initially, but now that I’ve had some time for it to sink in I’m really excited to not only be able to referee some of the best teams in the world, but also to be able to referee in my home city where it all started with family and friends in the stands,” Kaesler said.

Kaesler has continued to build an impressive international resume over the past 18 months, including officiating at the 2024 World Aquatics Championships, experiences she says have played a major role in her development at the elite level.

“I’ve been incredibly fortunate to be appointed to a number of World Aquatics events over the past 12-18 months,” she said.

“Each one of them has been a unique chance to learn from some of the best, develop as a person and as an official and perform at the highest level.”

She also encouraged aspiring referees to stay committed to the journey and embrace every opportunity along the way.

“Stick at it and never forget why you started,” she said.

“To get to the national or international level it takes lots of time, patience and focus, and there’s no such thing as linear progression or instantaneous opportunities as an official.

“Learn from every opportunity and experience you’re provided, and take in all the little milestones and victories along the way, they’re the important milestones.”

Veteran administrator and official Don Cameron, who currently serves as Vice Chair of the Technical Water Polo Committee for World Aquatics, said the tournament presents a major opportunity for Australian referees to showcase their abilities in front of a home crowd.

“It’s a great opportunity for the two referees that have been selected for the tournament to perform in such a prestigious tournament in Sydney for the first time since the Olympic Games in 2000,” Cameron said.

“A great opportunity to work and show what they can do in front of their home supporters.”

Cameron, who has represented Australia across coaching, officiating and administration over many decades, also highlighted the evolution of the sport and the spectacle fans can expect when the world’s best arrive in Sydney.

“It’s an enormous opportunity for people to see live how the sport has progressed in its athleticism and its skills since 2000,” he said.

“These athletes are incredibly strong, skillful and athletic, but it’s also a very spectacular sport to watch, particularly up close.”

Nicholas Hodgesr also joins the officiating team after previously refereeing at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, further underlining the depth of Australian officiating talent at the highest level.

The World Cup Finals will provide Australian fans with the chance to witness world-class water polo in Sydney, while also celebrating the continued success and recognition of Australian officials on the global stage.

Water Polo Australia congratulates Ash Kaesler, Nicholas Hodgers and Don Cameron on their appointments and looks forward to seeing them represent Australia with distinction at the World Cup Finals in Sydney.
