For National Volunteers Week, (18-24 May 2026), we are proud to highlight some of the incredible members of our community who dedicate their time to making a difference. Volunteers play such an important role, especially at a grassroots level, and we are incredibly grateful for the contribution they make every day.
Lee Bendeich has been volunteering with Central Newcastle Water Polo for over 20 years. After members of her family became involved in the sport, Bendeich naturally developed a passion for water polo herself. With a background in swimming, she said the transition into the sport felt like a natural fit.
Over the years, Lee has taken on many roles within the club, enjoying the organisation and behind the scenes work that helps the game days run smoothly each week.
“There is a lot of satisfaction in watching the children turn up excited to jump in the water,” she said.
“I also love to help our juniors learn how to score and organise the games. They are amazing, organised children.”
When reflecting on whether there was a particular moment where she felt her contribution had made a difference, Lee said it is the everyday impact of volunteering that is most rewarding.
“I get great feedback of thanks from our members often which gives me a sense of pride that I am helping the club towards continuing success.” she said.
Her contribution has extended well beyond the day-to-day — Lee has been a great pioneer for female representation in the sport in NSW, working to ensure women have a seat at the table in governance and administration at the local level.
Through her efforts, female participation across all levels of the club has grown significantly, with registrations for women’s teams surging in recent years and multiple women’s sides now competing across different grades.
For Lee, community is at the heart of volunteering and one of the reasons the water polo network is so special.
“You must have the ability to communicate well, understand what other community users need, and promote positive healthy relationships with the community.” she said.
Lee encourages anyone considering volunteering to get involved, and that includes stepping up into leadership and governance roles, particularly for women who may feel unsure about where to start. She is passionate about the value that diverse voices bring to the sport off the water, not just on it.
“You develop lifetime friendships through water polo.” she said.
